Strawberry legs Marks

We have all been there having shaved and still seeing the tiny dots on the legs. This can be embarrassing when wearing skirts or shorts in the summer months. Strawberry marks are often caused due to the coarse hair follicle and they are more prominent with darker hair follicles and darker Fitzpatrick skin types.

What causes strawberry leg marks?

Strawberry leg marks are open comedones which have the hair follicle and also have a build up of dead keratinocytes and sebum from the natural oils in the body.

Exfoliating can help by reducing the dead skin build up in the open pores and also reducing the excess sebum in the hair follicle. Shaving and waxing can upset the natural skin barrier function which can lead to excess sebum or dry flaky skin. When these enter the open pore the dark spots appear more prominent.

Reducing Strawberry leg marks

Unfortunately, there is no easy way of reducing the strawberry leg marks. I know this may sound disappointing for many people. Strawberry legs are more visible with darker hair types. They are the open hair follicles when we shave or wax. These open pores are a natural part of the skin and therefore there is no treatment to get rid of them entirely. We can help reduce them by doing the following:

Exfoliate the skin, once a week is sufficient. This will help bring the dead skin cells to the surface and also reduce the sebum levels. It will also help bring any ingrown hair to the surface and the appearance of bumps on the skin to reduce.

Moisturiser – hydrating the skin will help reduce the number of dead skin cells and reduce the flaky skin. Dry and flaky skin is more common in the winter months. Keep the skin hydrated as best as you can. Applying a lotion or moisturiser after the bath can help lock in the  moisture in the skin.

Shaving and Waxing – reducing the number of times you wax and shave can also help reduce the dark spots on the legs. As waxing and shaving regularly can keep opening the pores.

Laser hair removal can offer an effective treatment to reduce the hair growth on the legs. Laser hair removal targets the melanin in the skin and does not impact the surrounding skin. Laser hair removal can help reduce the number of dots of the strawberry marks as the need to shave and wax will be dramatically reduced over time.

Investing in laser hair removal will not only give you hair free skin it will give you confidence too. Laser hair removal offers a permanent reduction in hair.
