Laser Hair Removal and Hair Growth stages.

Having made the decision to start your laser hair removal journey; is the first step in becoming hair-free. Each session will consist of an ongoing medical consent to see if there have been any changes to your lifestyle, medication, and health.

Laser hair removal offers a permanent reduction to unwanted hair. It saves you time from shaving, waxing and plucking. Laser hair removal sessions are conducted every 4-6 weeks apart. This is due to the hair growth cycle and the time it takes for the hair to be in the anagen phase which is the active hair growth period. The anagen phase is ideal for laser hair removal treatment.

In each session, only a certain number of hairs will be in the active growth phase. This is the reason why a treatment course for laser hair removal is recommended. One single treatment of laser hair removal is not enough to give long-lasting results. A package of 6 treatments can effectively reduce hair by 65-75% on average. After each session, around 20-30% of hair reduction can occur.

Results vary from person to person and in each session, your therapist will ask about your shaving habits and how often you are shaving. Our experienced therapists will examine the area during a visual assessment to look at the hair follicles. The settings of the laser are set out within our laser protocols which have been tried and tested to give you the most optimum results possible.

Following the laser hair removal session, you may notice that the hairs sprout back out very quickly, please do not be alarmed by this. This is perfectly normal as these are the hairs that were already within the skin at the time of the treatment. You can shave these hairs off, or hair shedding may occur naturally (Please note not all clients have hair shedding). A course of 6-12 sessions is the minimum we recommend. Our packages start at 6 sessions and then our therapists will assess the hair reduction and advice you on the best possible package for you to continue your laser hair removal journey. Prices for the maintenance packages are bespoke to your needs and requirements.

Within the first 3 sessions, you should start to notice areas of patchy hair growth, hair shedding or finer regrowth of the hair. These are all excellent indications that the laser hair removal treatments are working. Sometimes it can take longer than 3 sessions to see the results. The results depend on many different factors such as medical conditions, hormonal imbalance, medication and density of the hair.

We must remember that laser hair removal is a journey, and the journey length is different for each client. Our experienced therapists are with you on this journey. If you have any questions, concerns or you just want to discuss your results then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will arrange this for you with your therapist.

Our laser is comfortable for the client, it is virtually pain-free with contact cooling to the area to soothe the skin at the same time. The contact cooling helps relieve any irritation of, erythema and make the treatment more tolerable for the client. Many clients have stated that the most they feel are a warm sensation.  Our therapist will ask during your treatment of your comfort levels between 1 and 10 (10 being painful). If at any point your comfort levels, go above 6 the therapist can adjust the treatment to make it more comfortable. Please let the therapist know during your treatment.

Hair Growth Cycle

The hair growth cycle is so much more than just hair growth and hair loss, The stages of the hair growth cycle consist of 3 main stages. Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. Anagen is known as the active growth phase, Catagen is the hair transition phase, Telogen consists of the resting stage followed by the Exogen phase which is when the hair sheds and fallouts.

Anagen, Catagen and Telogen cover the phases of growth, maturation and resting of the hair follicles. Each phase has its own timing. The exact length of time each phase lasts is dependent on diet, nutrition and overall general health of the individual.

1 Anagen  – Active Growth Phase

The very first stage of the hair growth cycle. The hair is in a growing phase. This is one of the longest phases which can last between 3-5 years for the hair on your head. For some people this phase can be longer, lasting up to 7 years. During this phase, the hair follicles are pushing out hairs which will continue to grow until you trim or cut them. At any one time, 90% of hairs on our head can be in the active growth phase.

During laser hair removal the active growth phase plays an important part as hair in the active growth phase for laser hair removal will be targeted. The laser will penetrate the hair deep within the skin, the thermal energy generated from the laser beam will destroy the hair follicle resulting in delayed regrowth and patchy hair growth.

2 Catagen Phase –  Transitional Phase

The Catagen phase starts when the anagen phase comes to an end. This phase tends to last around 10 days, the catagen phase is considerably shorter compared to the active growth phase. During the catagen phase, the hair follicles shrink and the hairs grow at a much slower phase. The hair will disengage from the follicle during this phase however it remains in its place during this phase.

Only 5% of hairs on the head are in the catagen phase.

3 Telogen Phase – Resting Phase

The Telogen phase usually lasts around 3 months. At any time during the Telogen phase, 10-15% of hairs are in the resting phase at a time.  During the telogen phase, the hairs do not grow and they may not shed until the next phase of exogen.  The hair is at rest in this phase, meaning the next phase is the anagen where new hair starts to grow.

4 Exogen Phase

This phase is an extension to the telogen phase of the hair growth cycle. During this phase, hair is shed. This phased is helped and pushed along by hair washing such as shampooing the scalp where 50 – 100 hairs will be shed after shampooing.

This phase can last 2-5 months and new hair begin to form as the old hairs are shed.

Having a good healthy balanced diet will help the hair growth cycle function properly and in a timely way. Reducing stress can also help unnecessary hair loss and hair shedding excessively.
