Ingrowing hairs

Ingrowing hairs are hairs that get stuck under the skin. These ingrown hairs cause bumps on the skin and irritation. Waxing, shaving, and epilating can all contribute towards ingrown hairs. The hairs can grow in the wrong direction or curl under the skin. This can cause the skin to be inflamed and angry looking. The bumps are unsightly on the skin and if they are not treated correctly, they can cause infection and pigmentation on the area.

How to treat Ingrown hairs?

Reduce the number of times you shave, wax or epilate as this can increase your chances of getting ingrown hairs.

Exfoliate – Gently exfoliate the area that is being treated, exfoliate once a week to regulate the keratinocytes as the dead skin cells will be removed. Exfoliating can also help with the excess sebum levels which can go under the skin infecting the ingrown hair causing pain irritation.

Hydration – Hydrating the area can also help with the buildup of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface which can induce ingrown hairs as the skin’s natural cellular renewal may have slowed down. Drink plenty of water, moisturise the skin twice a day morning and night. Pay extra attention to the skin in the very hot weather and the winter months. Avoid having very hot baths or showers as this can deplete the natural moisture in the skin.

Laser hair removal – Laser hair removal can significantly reduce the number of ingrown hairs. This is due to the laser targeting the hair follicle within the skin. Each treatment of laser hair removal will destroy the hair bulb which will in turn become dormant. The dormant hairs will now longer grow at the speed they used to, they will become finer and eventually fall out. The finer hairs will reduce the risk of having ingrown hairs.

Laser hair removal is carried out every 4-6 weekly and treatments can be purchased in packages of 6-12. 6 -12 treatments will give you optimum results in reducing the hair and also removing the ingrown hairs within the skin. As you will not shave as often with laser hair removal, this will help with ingrown hairs too. Over time the hairs will eventually fall out as the hair follicle has been destroyed.

Maintenance treatments are recommended with all laser hair removal packages. Maintenance treatments will be discussed by the therapist when your package is due to end.
