When was the term cellulite coined?
In 1873, doctors Émile Littré and Charles-Philippe Robin included the word “cellulite” in the 12th edition of the Dictionnaire de Médecine.
Over a century later, in the 1920s, spa and beauty services used cellulite treatments to promote their services. The word began to appear in English-language publications in the late 1960s, even referenced in Vogue magazine, “Like a swift migrating fish, the word cellulite has suddenly crossed the Atlantic.” The medicalisation of cellulite (treating it like a medical problem) was extremely popular within this time, as it drove sales of cosmetic treatments.
What is Cellulite?
The causes of cellulite are multifactorial, and there is no set definition of what causes cellulite. Cellulite occurs from connective tissue changes and compresses the fat; this gives a dimpled skin appearance. As we age, we tend to lose the connective tissue containing the collagen and elastin, which weakens the connective tissue leading to bulging. Cellulite affects up to 98% of women. Who is more prone to the condition than men due to the connective tissue predeposition.

Here are six ways – to achieving cellulite reduction
1. Eat well
A healthy and balanced diet can help reduce the appearance of cellulite—simple steps such as lessen salt intake. Salt contains sodium which holds onto water causing water retention—cutting down refined sugar—refined sugar stores in the fat cells, which causes the fat cells to expand. Research suggests eating more alkaline foods also aids in cellulite reduction.
2. Water is your friend
It’s as simple as that. Water helps flush the toxins within our body, including the toxins that are under fat cells. Hydration helps with all body functions, reducing the appearance of cellulite by regulating the water content within the cells and flushing away the toxins and waste products.
3. Brush your beautiful body
Dry body brushing helps improve circulation and lymphatic drainage. A few extra minutes added to your routine before showering is a great way of reducing cellulite. Begin the body brush from your ankles and work your way up, do this in a circular motion. In time you will start noticing fewer dimples and less dry skin. You can also use hydrating body oil or moisturiser afterwards.

Cardio does not only help with increasing your heart rate but also burns fat. This combination is a great way to lessen the appearance of cellulite. Start slow and easy and build your way up to an exercise regime that is suitable for you.
5. Creams, lotions and potions
There are many different types of cellulite creams available on the market today, prices ranging from low to high, Nivea, Bio-Oil Skincare Oil, Garnier Body Tonic Firming Body Lotion – to name a few.
The main thing to consider is what these creams contain. Caffeine is a crucial ingredient in some cellulite creams as caffeine temporarily constricts blood vessels and fat cells. Also, peptides and amino acids help aid the production and longevity of elastin and collagen fibres.
6. Non-invasive body treatments such as Endoshape.
Non-invasive body treatments such as Endoshape (Exclusively at our Harley Street Clinic) Envie.co.uk – EndoShape – Comfortable, Non-invasive Body Contouring ultrasound cavitation, fat freezing, Radiofrequency all work on different mechanisms. Still, the principle of action is the same to reduce fat cells. The deep heating of the fat cells, connective tissue, and collagen fibres help regenerate new collagen and elastin fibre for a firmer appearance and eliminate waste and toxins through the lymphatic systems.
